What Is the dMAT Test for Germany?

The Digital Master Test (dMAT) serves as a standardised aptitude test for those seeking admission to Master’s courses. It was jointly developed by universities working with g.a.s.t (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung) and is conducted digitally at selected test centres.

For Indian students, the dMAT is being introduced from 2026 as an additional element in the APS documentation and verification process for selected applicants who want to pursue a Master’s in Germany.

The dMAT is therefore an important new step for certain Indian students planning their German Master’s journey.

Who Needs to Take the dMAT for a Master’s in Germany?

According to the current APS India rules, the dMAT requirement applies to selected Master’s applicants whose previous undergraduate degree falls within one of these fields:

Previous degree field Current dMAT requirement
Engineering Applicable to affected applicants
Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Economics Applicable to affected applicants
Business or Management Applicable to affected applicants

For applicants in these affected fields, the dMAT is currently required as part of the APS documentation for Master’s applications relating to the Summer Semester 2027 intake and subsequent Master’s intakes, subject to applicable transitional exemptions.

1. Is dMAT Required for BTech Students?

If your previous undergraduate degree, branch, major or specialisation is classified as Engineering, you may fall under the current dMAT requirement.

This applies if you are applying for a Master’s in Germany for the Summer 2027 intake or a later intake.

APS India uses the official degree title and academic details to determine the applicable field.

Is dMAT Required for Btech Students

2. Is dMAT Required for BCom Students?

Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics are among the undergraduate fields currently listed by APS India as affected fields.

Therefore, eligible BCom graduates planning a relevant Master’s application for Summer 2027 or later may need to take the dMAT as part of their APS documentation.

3. Is dMAT Required for BBA or BMS Students?

Business and Management are also among the fields currently covered by the dMAT requirement.

Degrees such as BBA, BBM, BMS and other formally classified Business or Management degrees can therefore fall under the requirement.

This applies to Summer 2027 or later Master’s applications.

APS India makes the final classification based on the official academic documents.

4. Who Does Not Need the dMAT?

The current APS India guidance identifies several groups that are not affected by the current dMAT requirement, including:

  • Students applying for Bachelor’s programmes in Germany
  • PhD applicants
  • Applicants whose previous degree does not fall within the selected fields
  • Students covered under officially validated exchange, dual-degree, or university partnership programmes
  • Certain applicants are covered by the transitional exemptions

The exact classification can depend on your academic background and application situation, so check the latest APS India guidance before registering.

When Is dMAT Mandatory for Germany?

The current dMAT requirement for affected Indian applicants is linked to the Summer Semester 2027 Master’s intake and subsequent Master’s intakes.

However, APS India has also published transitional rules.

Applicants who completed their APS online registration before 29 June 2026 or shipped their complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026 are exempt from the dMAT requirement for that APS procedure, subject to the applicable APS conditions.

Applicants who completed APS online registration and submitted their documents on or after 29 June 2026 may be required to provide the dMAT certificate if their previous degree falls within an affected field and their application relates to Summer Semester 2027 or a later Master’s intake.

This means students should not rely on older Germany admission guides published before the dMAT requirement was introduced.

What Is the dMAT Exam Pattern?

The dMAT consists of two broad parts:

  1. Core Module
  2. Subject Module

For the Indian APS process, the relevant subject module is currently the General Academic Module.

1. Core Module

The Core Module tests a candidate’s general readiness for higher studies and cognitive abilities.

The official preparation material includes three main task types:

  • Figure Sequences
  • Mathematical Equations
  • Latin Squares

These tasks are designed to assess general cognitive and analytical abilities rather than simply checking whether you have memorised information.

2. General Academic Module

In the Indian APS context, students take the General Academic Module as their subject-specific module.

Its main focus is the practical application of cognitive and analytical abilities in academic problem-solving. The official dMAT information explains that the test requires application and transfer skills rather than simple memorisation of facts.

How Long Is the dMAT?

Official dMAT information currently states that the examination takes approximately three and a half hours, including a break between the examination modules.

Students should follow the latest instructions provided for their registered test because operational details can be updated.

What Is the dMAT Syllabus?

The dMAT is not best understood as a traditional syllabus-based examination where you simply memorise chapters.

The official preparation material focuses on understanding the task types and practising how to solve them.

For the Core Module, students should become familiar with:

1

Figure Sequences

You are shown a sequence of figures and need to identify the pattern and determine the correct continuation.

The official preparation resources provide sample tasks and explanations to help students understand how these questions appear on screen.

2

Mathematical Equations

These questions involve identifying relationships and solving mathematical patterns or equations.

The objective is to understand the relationship presented in the question and apply the required reasoning rather than simply recall a formula.

3

Latin Squares

These tasks use grids where symbols or letters follow specific row and column rules.

The official preparation material provides examples so students can understand how these questions work and practise solving them without relying on external help during the test.

4

General Academic Module

This module focuses on academic problem-solving and the ability to apply relevant knowledge and reasoning skills.

The official preparation page for dMAT includes practice tasks, solutions, step-by-step instructions, and videos that show how each task is presented digitally.

Is the dMAT an MCQ Exam?

Yes. The current dMAT uses a single-choice answer format, meaning you select one answer from the options provided.

The Core Module has three parts: Figure Sequences, where you identify patterns; Mathematical Equations, where you solve relationships between unknown values; and Latin Squares, where you apply logical rules to complete a grid.

These tasks test cognitive skills rather than memorised facts. The General Academic Module works differently. You are given a typical academic problem followed by related questions.

The focus is on applying your knowledge and reasoning to the problem rather than simply recalling facts from a textbook.

Is the dMAT an MCQ Exam

How Difficult Is the dMAT?

Your experience may depend on how comfortable you are with logical reasoning, analytical thinking, problem-solving and working with unfamiliar question formats.

The better approach is to use the official preparation material before the test. This helps you understand how the questions appear on screen and what type of reasoning is expected.

Instead of spending all your preparation time trying to memorise information, focus on understanding the question types and practising how to approach them.

How Can You Prepare for the dMAT?

A simple preparation plan can help.

1

Start With Official dMAT Material

The first step is to access the preparation materials on the official dMAT website.

The official material includes sample tasks, solutions, explanations and videos showing how the test works on screen.

2

Understand the Question Format

Before trying to improve your speed, understand what each task is asking you to do.

Practise the three task types - Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations, and Latin Squares - until the format no longer feels new.

3

Practise Regularly

Regular practice can help you become more comfortable with unfamiliar question types.

Focus on solving problems accurately first and then gradually improve your speed.

4

Work on Your Reasoning Speed

The dMAT is designed to assess cognitive skills, application and problem-solving. Practise identifying patterns and relationships without depending on memorisation.

5

Do Not Depend on Unofficial Claims

Avoid preparation advice that promises a specific score, percentile or university admission.

Can You Use a Calculator in the dMAT?

No. Calculators are not allowed during the dMAT. The official g.a.s.t. exam rules specifically prohibit calculators and other electronic devices during the examination.

The rules also state that only the required identity document may be kept on the desk and that candidates may not take notes during the dMAT.

Students should therefore practise using the official preparation material without calculators, notes or other prohibited aids.

How to Register for dMAT in India?

Students need to complete the dMAT application form through the official g.a.s.t. registration system and follow the instructions provided during the registration process.

Responsibility for administering the dMAT lies with g.a.s.t., not APS India.

g.a.s.t. handles dMAT registration, payment, test-centre booking, technical information and certificate provision, while APS India remains responsible for the separate APS document verification process.

Here is the current official schedule for the first dMAT test cycle in India:

Stage Current date
Registration starts 29 June 2026
Registration deadline 15 September 2026
First dMAT test date 26 September 2026

What Is the dMAT Exam Fee in India?

The current dMAT exam fee is €150.00. The examination fee is charged by g.a.s.t. and becomes payable during the official registration process for the dMAT. APS India confirms the current €150.00 fee on its official dMAT information page.

For Indian students, €150 is approximately ₹16,700 at an exchange rate of around ₹111.3 per euro. The exact INR amount may vary because the EUR-INR exchange rate and the exchange rate applied by your payment provider can change.

dMAT registration fee and APS document verification are two distinct processes with separate charges. Registration, payment, and test-centre booking for the dMAT are handled by g.a.s.t., while APS India remains responsible for the APS procedure and academic document verification.

Does dMAT Guarantee Admission to a German University?

No. Clearing the dMAT does not mean you will automatically get admission to a German university.

In the case of eligible Indian applicants, the dMAT forms an additional part of the APS documentation requirements. University admission remains a separate process, and universities can have their own academic, language, and programme-specific requirements.

The official dMAT site notes that every university decides on its own how dMAT results will be considered. Therefore, students should always check the admission requirements of each Master’s programme separately.

dMAT vs APS vs TestAS: What Is the Difference?

Requirement What it does
dMAT An aptitude test that acts as a supplementary requirement in the APS documentation for specific Master's applicants
APS Verifies academic documents and qualifications for study in Germany
TestAS Academic aptitude test used in different admission contexts

For affected Indian applicants, the dMAT is an additional element in the APS documentation. It does not replace APS document verification.

How Does dMAT Work With the APS Certificate?

This is where many students may get confused.

The dMAT does not replace APS.

For affected applicants, the dMAT certificate becomes part of the APS documentation. APS India continues to handle academic document verification, while g.a.s.t. administers the dMAT.

APS India states that the dMAT result will also be referenced on the APS certificate.

Can I Apply for APS Before Taking dMAT?

Yes. APS India currently states that affected applicants may submit their complete APS application documents before the dMAT certificate is available.

APS India can begin the document verification process in advance where possible. However, the APS certificate can only be issued after the required dMAT certificate has been submitted and the dMAT result has been checked.

Therefore, students who are affected by the requirement do not necessarily need to wait for the dMAT certificate before submitting their other APS documents.

Does dMAT Replace APS Document Verification?

No. APS India will continue to verify the authenticity and formal plausibility of academic documents under the existing APS procedure.

The dMAT is an additional element and does not replace the APS verification process.

Can a Low dMAT Score Automatically Lead to APS Rejection?

No. The APS certificate is not granted or denied solely on the basis of the dMAT as a stand-alone pass/fail test. APS India continues to verify the authenticity and formal plausibility of academic documents under its APS procedure.

For applicants who are required to take the dMAT, the certificate is a required part of the APS documentation, but a low dMAT score does not automatically mean that APS India will refuse to issue the APS certificate.

The dMAT result is reflected on the APS certificate as part of the applicant’s documentation.

Do I Need Both dMAT and APS?

If you fall under the current dMAT requirement for the relevant Germany Master’s intake, yes.

The dMAT forms part of your APS documentation, but the two are not interchangeable.

You need to follow the applicable APS procedure and provide the required dMAT certificate if the requirement applies to your application.

What Happens After You Take the dMAT?

After completing the test, the dMAT certificate is issued by g.a.s.t.

The certificate can be downloaded through the participant portal once the results are available.

The official dMAT certificate reports two results: the dMAT score and the percentile rank. The dMAT score is converted to a value between 0 and 200, with 100 as the mean.

The percentile rank shows how your result compares with other participants. For example, a percentile rank of 70 means that 70% of participants achieved a lower or equal result, while 30% achieved a higher result.

Common dMAT Mistakes Indian Students Should Avoid

  • Assuming every Master’s applicant needs the dMAT
  • Confusing dMAT with APS
  • Assuming APS documents cannot be submitted before the dMAT certificate becomes available
  • Waiting unnecessarily when your APS application can already be submitted
  • Relying on outdated dates
  • Assuming every degree with a similar-sounding title automatically falls under an affected field
  • Assuming dMAT means university admission
  • Treating unofficial preparation material as more authoritative than the official dMAT resources
  • Assuming a particular dMAT score guarantees admission to a university
Common dMAT Mistakes Indian Students Should Avoid

A Simple dMAT Preparation Checklist

Before your dMAT, make sure you:

  • Understand the Core Module task types
  • Practise Figure Sequences
  • Practise Mathematical Equations
  • Practise Latin Squares
  • Review the General Academic Module preparation material
  • Watch the official preparation videos
  • Practise without relying on notes or external helping tools
  • Check your g.a.s.t. registration and test-centre details
  • Carry the identification and documents required by the official test-day instructions
  • Check the latest information on the official dMAT and APS websites before the examination

The official dMAT website recommends using its available preparation materials because the videos and sample tasks explain how the examination works on screen.

Sample dMAT Practice Questions

The official dMAT preparation material provides sample tasks for the actual Core Module question types, including Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations and Latin Squares.

Because the dMAT format and preparation material are controlled by g.a.s.t., students should use those official examples rather than relying on unrelated reasoning questions found on third-party websites.

The official preparation resources include sample tasks, solutions, task instructions and videos showing how the questions work on screen.

What Is the Current dMAT Schedule in India?

The following dates are for the first published dMAT administration in India. Because dMAT dates and registration windows can change for future test cycles, students should verify the latest schedule on the official dMAT website before registering.

Milestone Date
Registration Opening Date 29 June 2026
Registration Deadline 15 September 2026
Official Examination Date 26 September 2026
Certificate Available Online 12 October 2026

Timeline Strategy for Students Planning Summer 2027

Students planning the Summer Semester 2027 intake should not leave the APS and dMAT process until the last minute.

If the dMAT requirement applies to you, remember that you may be able to submit your APS documents before the dMAT certificate becomes available. APS India can begin the verification process in advance, but the APS certificate can only be issued after the required dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked.

The first published dMAT certificate date is 12 October 2026, so students should consider their university application deadlines when planning their APS and dMAT timeline.

Test-centre availability can also depend on available seats, so students should check the official g.a.s.t. registration portal when registration is open.
