Studying in UK After Brexit

Is it more difficult to studying in UK after Brexit? This is the first question many students and parents ask today. If you are planning to study abroad, the United Kingdom is probably already on your mind. It has always been one of the top choices for Indian students. However, things have changed since January 2020. The UK officially departed from the European Union in a process known as Brexit. By the end of 2020, the transition was completed, and new regulations regarding students were issued.

In reality, while some things became tougher to do, Brexit has opened up many opportunities for international students, particularly for those from India. Let’s go through it step by step.

What Exactly Changed for Students After Brexit?

After Brexit, rules for students also shifted, from admissions to visas; a lot of things are now different:

  • Free Movement Ended: Before Brexit, EU students could come to the UK without restrictions. After the changes, they have to follow the same rules as other international students.
  • New Immigration Rules: The UK now has a points-based immigration system that will apply to everyone, regardless of whether you are from France, India, or anywhere else.
  • Tuition & Funding: In the past, EU students had lower fees and access to UK student loans. After Brexit, that benefit is gone for EU students; now they pay the same international tuition as Indian students.

Life After Brexit: The New Rules for EU Students

Here’s how Brexit changed the experience for EU students:

  • EU students are now placed in the same fee category as other foreign students.
  • They can no longer access UK government student loans.
  • Studying in the UK now requires both a student visa and a health surcharge.
  • Because of this, fewer EU students are choosing UK universities.

Universities in UK

Why Brexit Benefits Indian & International Students

Here’s the good news: Brexit has actually balanced the field for Indian students.

  • EU students no longer get special treatment, which means more chances for Indian applicants.
  • With the Graduate Route (PSW), you can work in the UK for 2 years after graduation, or 3 years if you finish a PhD.
  • The universities in the UK are actively focusing on countries like India for admissions and scholarships.
  • Classrooms in the UK have become more global, giving students exposure to different cultures and ideas.

Work Opportunities in the UK After Brexit.

Thinking about jobs after graduation? The UK still offers strong options.

  • Skilled Worker Visa rules are now the same for everyone.
  • The Graduate Route Visa makes it easier to gain UK work experience after your studies.
  • Sectors like Healthcare, IT, Finance, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, and Green Energy are all hiring skilled graduates.

Student Exchanges & Research Opportunities After Brexit

Brexit also changed how research and exchange programs work.

  • The UK has ended Erasmus+ and introduced the Turing Scheme to help students join study exchanges worldwide.
  • In 2023, the UK rejoined Horizon Europe, giving students more opportunities in world-class research.

Should You Study in the UK After Brexit? Pros & Cons Explained.

 Pros:

  • All students now have an equal and fair chance
  • The Graduate Route (PSW visa) makes it easier to stay back and work after studies.
  • UK universities are offering more scholarships and a wider global exposure.

 Cons:

  • EU students face higher tuition fees.
  • Career prospects in the UK remain strong, but some industries are facing ups and downs after Brexit.

Is the UK Still a Good Study Abroad Option Post-Brexit?

If you are thinking whether the UK is still a good choice, the simple answer is yes.

  • The UK has world-class universities like Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial.
  • The Graduate Route Visa is a big advantage for building your career in the UK..
  • The UK government and universities are welcoming more international students than ever.

So, if you are an Indian student planning higher studies abroad, the UK after Brexit is still one of the best options for education, research, and career growth.

This increases your chances of getting scholarships, and you may start receiving offers soon. Second, early applications are way before deadlines. As you were before in the queue and what attracts you to admission, and plus scholarships.

Every university gives away scholarships ranging from a 20% to a 40% tuition fee waiver in some cases. Not all get it. We do not want to raise high hopes and say 100% scholarships are attracted; it happens very rarely, and we call a spade a spade. So, do not want to do wrong marketing and try to build a false claim.

Student need to open their account in the selected universities and start filling out the application. We at Education Street help in this whole process. 3. SOP
  4. CV
  5. Degree Certificates (If Graduated)
  6. Work Exp Proof (If working)
  7. IELTS or TOEFL score
  8. GRE (Optional)

The form-filling of USA universities is very time-consuming and requires precision. It requires effort and knowledge for this task, and hence recommended to take expert help.

Eligibility Criteria for Doing an MS in the USA

Different courses have different requirements. However, in general, every university in the USA gives admission based on three pillars.

1- Past Academics

Any academic university will always base its main decision on your past academic performance. This cannot be replaced anyway. You may have done exceptionally well in other fields, but the most important criterion is academics in the past. If you have not done well, do not be demotivated.

There are options for everyone, and hence, you need the right counsellor to answer this from their experience. A CGPA of 8/10 points definitely is a good profile to consider for high-ranked universities in the USA.

But as mentioned, there are 1500+ universities in the USA, and hence every student has an option. 60-70% weightage of your application is given to your academics to make it clearer.

2- Test Scores

Both IELTS and TOEFL are acceptable in the USA. IELTS 6.5/9 Bands. TOEFL 90+/120. Most universities require this kind of score for USA admissions. You need to officially report this score from the respective testing agency.

GRE is optional as most universities post-COVID have taken this decision. If time permits, we would recommend taking the GRE as it would provide you with good options to apply. Also, the GRE is an aptitude test, so it certainly adds value to your profile. However, universities that mention on their website GRE is not required, even if you have undertaken it, they would not consider it.

So the right thing to do would be to apply to universities where it is mentioned GRE is required or recommended. So if you start your US applications on time, you would definitely have time to apply for the GRE and increase your chances for admission and scholarship. 20% weightage is given to your test scores.

3-Extracurriculars

US universities like to see what, apart from academic, you have done. Here you can talk about your skills, hobbies, passions, certifications, internships, volunteering, or projects. 10% weightage is given to this side of your profile. Again, if your planning starts early, then you get time to prepare this side of your application. Also, a warning here to not go overboard with this segment. Keep it real.

Career Scope after MS in the USA

Jobs have always been the highlight after a master’s in the USA. After so much investment, definitely understanding the scope is vital and critical to make this decision. Typically, the job salaries in the USA vary stream/area-wise as below:

Job CategoriesAverage Salary
Computer$75,000+
Engineering$72,000+
Business$70,000+
MBA$100,000+
Communications$62,000+
Healthcare$65,000+
Social Science$60,000+
Humanities$60,000+

The job market in the USA is very structured and has openings throughout the year. Also, we would like to bust one myth that if you study in New York, then you will only get a job there. Companies, when hiring, do not see which location in the USA you are based in. They look at your profile and accordingly hire.

Therefore, when you choose universities, it is not necessary to choose cities for the sake of jobs, as these jobs are always available to you.

Best Universities for Indian Students Abroad- A Complete Guide

Choosing the best universities for Indian Students abroad can be confusing because there are so many options in different countries. Whether you want a top-ranked university or one that fits your profile and budget, it’s important to make the right choice.

In this blog, we will guide Indian students and parents on how to research, compare, and select the best-fit universities abroad.

How to Select the Best Universities Abroad?

Going abroad and choosing which university to study is rated as the number one challenge for Indian students and Parents. Most who fail to research and follow their requirements fall for the wrong university and country, and hence turn their dream into a nightmare. I have seen several cases going right and several going wrong. The latter can be avoided, and hence we prepared this blog to help you in making the right decision.

Importance of Choosing the Right University

Firstly, let’s talk about University selection and the criteria that you should research upon. When you start the process to apply, understand that you have to apply to multiple options and not restrict yourself to a few. I suggest you apply to 6-10 universities to get a few offers in hand to choose from in the end.

Also, I feel that if you are confused in fixing on one country as a choice, you can apply to multiple countries. At Education Street, in fact, we do this for most of our students so that while we progress, if there is any change or in the end when we receive offers/scholarships, we have choices to pick from.

Types of Universities You May Encounter

The Internet would talk about two kinds of universities which are best for you. One of which is Ivy League universities, which everybody cannot get through. The second, which is the most common trap, is universities which are marketing themselves loudly. But in between them, there are several strong universities which students fail to research or opt for. Hence, a clean counsellor always helps and guides you on this path if you choose the correct one.

Types of Universities You May Encounter

Filters to Select the Right University

Let me set a few filters for you to choose the right and best university abroad:

  1. University name
  2. Course name
  3. Location
  4. Tuition Fees
  5. Duration of the course
  6. Entry Requirements
  7. Test Scores
  8. Deadlines
  9. Application fees
  10. Weather
  11. Feedback (Alumni/Known Person/Counsellor)
  12. Rating

How to Use These Filters Effectively

Prepare an Excel sheet with all this different data. Now, once you prepare these columns in the sheet, you can first do the research and populate all this data. Once you have the data, you can start putting ratings for each parameter.

Example: If you like the course curriculum a lot, you can give it 9/10, and likewise for all other university options. Tuition fees are suitable, then you again rate it as 5/10 or 10/10. Test score, if any particular required, and you do not have it, like say IELTS required is 7/9 and you have 6.5 that means chances are low you can add as 0/10, making the overall score for it lesser.

In the end, you would have the total score for each university and here this sheet will help you pick your top-rated university and make applications. Data and ratings are what you have to work upon to get the best suitable university for you. At Education Street, we prepare this for our students and save them with all our efforts, so if you wish, you can take our assistance.

Here, we have created a detailed guide on 👉top countries Indian students prefer for higher education.

Recommended Websites for Research

Some websites suitable for you to go and find a top-rated university for your particular country and course would be as follows, suggested by us:

  1. QS World University Rankings – www.topuniversities.com
  2. U.S. News Best Global Universities – http://www.usnews.com/education
  3. Financial Times (FT) Business School Rankings – https://rankings.ft.com/
  4. CRICOS – https://cricos.education.gov.au/
  5. Study in New Zealand – https://www.studywithnewzealand.govt.nz/en

Best Universities for Indian Students Abroad

  1. USA- MIT, Stanford University, University of Michigan
  2. UK- University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh
  3. Canada- University of Toronto, UBC, McGill University
  4. Australia- University of Melbourne, Monash University, University of Sydney
  5. Germany- TU Munich, Heidelberg University, RWTH Aachen

Final Thoughts: Don’t Follow the Herd

The best university decision is very subjective; students need to understand this. Your profile, your course choice and Your Affordability all together help us decide the right fit. However, I see a growing herd mentality of students where they follow their friends or family without mapping their profile.

It is important to understand your facts and figures to pick those 6-10 universities to apply to from the plethora of options you have to process applications. Proper research is required, and hence, time is needed.

Start Early and Apply Smart

Therefore, it is always recommended to start your study abroad applications 1 to 1.5 years prior to your actual intake. With the growing competitiveness and changing economies and we always suggest students to apply to multiple countries suitable for their profile and needs. A lot of data on the internet is marketing material of the universities and agents of these universities, and hence, believing data blindly also compromises your results.

Role of a Good Counsellor

A clean and well-established counsellor works like a doctor here who can identify your pain points and dilemmas and bring you the right prescription for universities.

Conclusion

Hope this blog helps you to choose the best universities for YOU !! Don’t fall for general tall claims.
